Jakshybek Djunushev is one of the prominent representatives of contemporary visual arts in Kyrgyzstan. He was born on October 12, 1978, in the city of Frunze. He began his journey in painting in 1995 when he enrolled in the S.A. Chuykov Art College, graduating in 1999 with a specialization in “painting.”
From a young age, Djunushev not only demonstrated talent but also a keen interest in the surrounding world, which later became a source of inspiration for his works. His first group exhibition took place in 2001, and by 2009, he held his first solo exhibition titled “Bohemia Dzerzhinka,” dedicated to his favorite city boulevard. A year later, another exhibition followed—“Touching Reality.”
The artist has participated in dozens of national and international exhibitions, plein airs, and art projects. His paintings have been displayed in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey, Iran, China, Uzbekistan, and Belarus. His works are held in private collections in Turkey, Russia, the USA, the UAE, Iran, and the CIS countries.
Since 2007, he has been a member of the Union of Artists of the Kyrgyz Republic, serving on the Board since 2014 and becoming its chairman in 2022. He actively works both as an organizer and the artistic director of the international project “Young Artists of the CIS Countries,” participates in educational initiatives, and conducts master classes for students at art universities in the CIS and Baltic states.
The primary theme of Djunushev’s work remains nature. His landscapes possess a rare ability to transport viewers to the tranquil corners of rural life: vast mountain landscapes, village streets, a childhood devoid of fuss. His paintings convey not only technical mastery but also deep poetry and a subtle perception of reality. He himself states that nature is the best teacher for an artist, as it helps develop the eye and the sense of form.
Djunushev’s painting is not just a depiction of the world but an exploration of it. His works serve as a window to a pristine, untouched space. There is no ostentation in his paintings—only sincerity, warmth, and lyricism. Even in panoramic compositions with an epic scale, a tender regard for details is palpable, adding soulful depth to his works.
Jakshybek Djunushev is known as an artist capable of painting quickly and passionately. He admits that one of his most rapid works was created in just half an hour in the frosty Kaji-Sai. At the same time, he has assembled some paintings from sketches over several years. For example, “Autumn Poplars” took two years of meticulous work to complete.
His creative process extends beyond the studio. He prefers plein air painting, where he gathers vibrant impressions and creates sketches that later evolve into full-scale paintings. For him, this is not only a method but also a way of life.
Jakshybek Djunushev is an artist in whose paintings the native land comes alive. His art is a bridge between the viewer and nature, between today and eternal values, reflected in every brushstroke.
